How big is Khao Sok?
Khao Sok National Park covers an area of 739 km².
The Cheow Lan Lake reservoir has an area of 165 km².
What is the best time to visit?
Khao Sok has three seasons:
- The dry season: November – February
- The hot season: March – May
- The rainy season: June – October
You have the best chance of good weather during the dry season. During the hot season, temperatures can reach up to 35°C, and part of the river may dry up. August and September are the wettest months of the rainy season.
Where to stay in Khao Sok?
Most tourists stay in what is called ‘Khao Sok Village,’ which is actually named Khlong Sok. It’s a small village with cozy cafes, good restaurants, massage salons, hotels, and tour operators.
If you don’t have your own transportation, we recommend staying in the center (which mostly consists of one street) so you can easily get around. We recommend the Khao Sok Jungle Huts Resort.
If you have your own car or motorbike, it can be fun to stay deeper in the jungle. My parents stayed at the Khao Sok Good View Resort and were very enthusiastic about it!
How many days do you need in Khao Sok?
We recommend staying at least three nights in Khao Sok. What most people do, and what we also recommend, is to spend the first night in the village of Khlong Sok, the second night on the lake, and the third night back in Khlong Sok.
However, if you’re someone who easily falls asleep on a boat, it might be more interesting to do the ‘3 days 2 nights Cheow Lan Lake tour.’ Instead of sleeping on a boat, you stay in a floating bungalow, right in the middle of the lake. 👉 Read more about this tour
If you’re not staying on the lake, you can also take day tours to the lake. There’s also plenty to do in the surrounding area to keep you busy for more than three days.
Which animals live in Khao Sok?
Khao Sok National Park is home to many animals. Think of wild elephants, leopards, muntjac deer, cobras, pythons, sambars, bantengs, and tapirs. Most of these wild animals are not easily spotted by tourists, although wild elephants are regularly seen from boats on Cheow Lan Lake.
In this rainforest, you can also find more than 300 species of birds, various types of monkeys, reptiles, insects, and bats.
How was Cheow Lan Lake formed?
In the 1980s, the Thai government conducted research into hydroelectric power and decided to dam the Pasaeng River. The result was the Ratchaprapha Dam, which you can see from the viewpoint.
In 1987, the valley flooded, creating Cheow Lan Lake — also known as Khao Sok Lake. The five villages that were evacuated at the time still lie at the bottom of the lake. The lake is now, on average, 40 meters deep, but in some places, it is even 90 meters deep.
Besides being a source of energy, Cheow Lan Lake also became an important food source for the region. The many fish in the lake turned it into a habitat for numerous bird species, now more than 300 in total. Animals slowly returned, and new species arrived as well. In the jungle around the lake, you can find Malayan bears, tigers, clouded leopards, and wild elephants. While most animals are hard to spot, wild elephants are often seen from the boat. We weren’t so lucky, but you might be!
The famous limestone cliffs are actually the peaks of mountains now submerged under water. They are often compared to Halong Bay in Vietnam.
In our opinion, this should be on everyone’s bucket list. It’s an incredible experience! With the ‘2 days 1 night Cheow Lan Lake tour,’ you stay on the lake in a floating bungalow.
During these two days, you’ll see the most beautiful views, watch the jungle come alive right in front of you, and visit a stunning cave.
On the lake, there’s no phone reception, so you’re completely cut off from the world. The only things you’ll see are the blue waters of the lake, endless jungle, limestone cliffs, and at night, an incredibly beautiful starry sky.
You can book this tour either in the village or through your hotel.
Sleep in a floating bungalow
Sleeping on Cheow Lan Lake doesn’t have to be primitive. There are plenty of (affordable) floating bungalows with private bathrooms where you can do the ‘2 days 1 night’ tour.
In this ‘travel diary,’ I’ll tell you all about the excursion.
Accommodation Tip
Khao Sok Jungle Huts Resort
Jungle Huts Resort is a great place to wake up. You’ll feel like you’re right in the jungle, complete with monkeys occasionally passing by. Yet, you’re just a short walk away from civilisation. Within minutes, you can reach the village with its cosy cafés, good restaurants, massage salons, and the entrance to the National Park.
Khao Sok Jungle Huts Resort offers fairly basic huts, which is where we stayed (as seen in the photos). However, they also have more luxurious options. Prices start at just €21. We also booked the 2 days 1 night tour through this resort.
The night safari sounded scarier than it actually was. Though we were mostly relieved that the spiders stayed perfectly still.
We walked through the jungle with a guide who could spot everything: monkeys, snakes, frogs, chameleons, spiders… you name it. It was a very enjoyable, yet slightly thrilling experience. Headlamps are provided, so no need to bring your own!
There’s no need to book this excursion in advance—you can easily arrange it on the day through your hotel or one of the local operators in the village.
Our tour was organised by Jungle Huts Resort.
Travel Tip
Bug spray (DEET)
When travelling through Thailand, you’ll likely use the pink insect repellent from 7-Eleven. However, if you’re heading into the rainforest, you might want something stronger. This not only protects against mosquitoes but also leeches, for instance. You can choose from various strengths, up to 95% DEET.
Wildlives sprays cost around 550 baht (€15), while Sunfly 95% DEET costs 295 baht (€8). These are available at the pharmacy in the village of Khlong Sok (Khao Sok Village).
Rafflesia Kerrii: The Second-Largest Flower in the World
Khao Sok National Park is home to the second-largest flower in the world: the Rafflesia kerrii. This unique flower has a diameter of 50 to 90 centimetres and can weigh up to 7 kg.
It may not smell pleasant—it emits the scent of rotting meat—but there’s a purpose behind it. The odour attracts flies for pollination.
You can spot this remarkable flower between December and March during a guided hike, which can be arranged via your hotel or in the village.
Tubing on the river
Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough water for tubing when we visited Khao Sok, but perhaps you’ll have better luck!
You can go tubing on the Khlong Sok River, where you float downstream on an inflatable tube starting from an elevated section of the river. This activity can be done any time of day—up until it gets dark—and can easily be booked in the village.
Khlong Sok Tip
Best massage salon
In need of a massage after all those jungle adventures? We highly recommend Relax Massage. It’s one of the few massage salons in Thailand that plays soothing background music. No chatter, no noise—just relaxation and an excellent massage.
A one-hour Thai massage costs 300 baht (€8), and an oil massage is 400 baht (€11). Enjoy!
#4 Koh Phangan
Next, we’re heading to Koh Phangan, a tropical island in the Gulf of Thailand. Often referred to as a hippie island, it’s also famous for the iconic Full Moon Party. But there’s so much more to this versatile destination!
Let us take you on a journey to this stunning, unique island!
#2 Krabi
Before immersing ourselves in this beautiful rainforest, we were in Krabi province, located along the Andaman Sea. Known for its paradise-like beaches and stunning limestone rock formations, it’s a destination that truly stands out.
