Everything you need to know before travelling to Bangkok.

What's Bangkok's real name?

Did you know that Bangkok has the longest name in the world? Here it is:

Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilik Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit

Locals also shorten it to ‘Krung Thep’.

Curious about what that long name actually means? Here’s the English translation:

The city of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra, the great capital of the world blessed with nine precious gems, the happy city, rich with an enormous royal palace that resembles the heavenly residence where the reincarnated god reigns, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarma.

There you go, now you know! 😊

How large is Bangkok?

Bangkok covers an area of 1,569 km² and, in addition to being the capital, is also the largest city in Thailand. The city is divided into 50 districts, each with its own neighborhoods. Bangkok itself has around 10 million residents, while the entire Bangkok metropolitan area has a population of 21 million.

How many days will you need in Bangkok?

We recommend staying at least four nights in Bangkok to get a feel for the city. If you stay shorter, you might risk being disappointed. Bangkok is a big, chaotic city that takes time to appreciate. Once you get used to it, though, you won’t want to leave.

We decided to head straight to Kanchanaburi upon arriving in Bangkok, saving the city for the end of our trip. So instead of staying two separate 2-night stops, we stayed 4 nights at the end. It took some getting used to, transitioning from so many days in nature to the city chaos, but after 24 hours, we didn’t want to leave Bangkok.

You could probably spend weeks, months, or even years in Bangkok and still discover something new. But, even though we’re true city lovers, the rest of Thailand is just too beautiful to stay in Bangkok for too long.

Bangkok Tip

King Power Mahanakhon

The view from the 78th floor of King Power Mahanakhon is absolutely stunning! You get a fantastic 360-degree view of the entire city, which is especially beautiful at sunset.

On the 314-meter-high platform, you can also experience the ‘SkyWalk’: a glass panel you can walk on, giving you the sensation of being right above the city. Are you a VR enthusiast? Then you can even fly over the city with a virtual parachute.

A visit to King Power Mahanakhon is a must-do in Bangkok!

Day trip to Kanchanaburi?

A popular day trip from Bangkok is Kanchanaburi. In one day, you’ll drive back and forth from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, visit the Erawan Waterfalls, the JEATH Museum, and the Bridge Over the River Kwai. This is a very packed schedule, leaving you with little time to explore at a leisurely pace. This 14-hour tour has great reviews and departs with a small group.

If you have more time, we recommend spending a few days in Kanchanaburi.

Travel Tip

Grab & Bolt: Aziatische Ubers

Download the Grab & Bolt apps if you’re heading to Thailand. These are the Asian equivalents of Uber and can be really useful for arranging affordable taxi rides.

You’ll need mobile data for this, which you can get by purchasing a SIM card in Thailand or ordering an eSIM online.

It’s super simple to use. Open the app, enter your destination, and see the price. Accept the price, and the taxi will pick you up at your location. You can see driver ratings, and any chat messages are automatically translated. Payment can be made through the app with a credit card or in cash.

These apps are not just great for booking taxis, but also for haggling. For example, if you want to take a tuk-tuk, you can use these apps as a benchmark for the price.

Bangkok’s green lung

Tired of the high-rise buildings and the hustle and bustle? Escape the city at the jungle island of Bang Krachao.

You can bike or e-scooter around. We chose the electric scooter and toured the island with another couple and a guide. We enjoyed all the greenery, visited a temple, tried some treats at a floating market, and ended the day with a delicious lunch.

Also planning to head to Khao San Road?

We see it everywhere: “Book a hotel near Khao San Road,” and this street is on almost every “must-do” list for Bangkok. We went there too. This street is supposed to be so lively and fun. You can probably guess from my tone, but I don’t agree.

Curious about what you can expect there?

#4 Koh Phangan

Before arriving in this metropolis, we were staying on the chill island of Koh Phangan. Known as Full Moon Party Island, the hippie island, but now also ‘our island’ because we fell in love with it.
