When you travel through Guatemala, you immediately feel the country’s deep sense of spirituality. The ancient Maya culture is still alive here, every single day. Look beyond the usual tourist highlights, and you’ll discover how deeply traditions are rooted in everyday life.
We wanted to experience the real Guatemala, not just the well-known tourist spots. That’s how we found ourselves at a traditional Maya fire ceremony at Lake Atitlán.
Some travel experiences stay with you long after, they leave a mark. This ceremony was one of those moments. No tourist show, no staged spectacle, just a ritual that has been performed in the same place for hundreds of years.

The Chicken Bus to a Sacred Cave at Lake Atitlán
We meet Alex in Panajachel, one of the most well-known villages on Lake Atitlán. Like his ancestors, he is a Maya shaman. He introduces us to his world and the traditions of his community.
The three of us hop onto the chicken bus. And that alone is an experience. An old American school bus, brightly decorated, blasting music, and full of honking. Not a comfortable tourist shuttle, but the way locals actually get around in Guatemala.
After a short ride, we walk towards the caves. Along the way, we stop at a small shop where Alex buys everything he needs for the ceremony: colourful candles, herbs, flowers, sugar, and other offerings.
As we continue walking, I ask him all sorts of questions about the Maya way of life and the meaning of the fire ritual. Then we see the cave. It’s completely blackened from years of smoke. Everything you touch turns pitch black.
This place has been used for ceremonies for around 400 years. You can feel it immediately. Inside, multiple rituals are happening at the same time. Smoke and fire everywhere, people fully absorbed in their prayers.
I get goosebumps.
The Traditional Maya Fire Ritual
Alex first explains everything about the Maya calendar and the spiritual meaning of the ritual. Then he asks what intentions he should carry out the ceremony for. This isn’t a demonstration for tourists, it’s a genuine spiritual ceremony, following Maya tradition.
I ask if I can take photos and videos. For him, that’s fine, as long as we don’t film the other people in the cave. We’re the only two tourists here, which makes the experience even more special.
The shaman moves around the fire, chanting prayers in one of the Maya languages and performing ritual gestures. He is completely focused. Every now and then, he adds something to the flames or pours a liquid over them, making them flare up suddenly.
Goosebumps. Again.
The Burning Cave
Until the smoke becomes truly overwhelming. It feels like standing in a burning house. The smoke stings my eyes and throat. I need fresh air. We decide to step outside for a moment, where the ritual thankfully continues.
I am blessed, and the final prayers are spoken.
After catching my breath, I go back inside. The fire is extinguished, and everything is carefully cleared away.
I take one last look around. How incredible it is to have witnessed this!

How to Book This Maya Ceremony
This isn’t your standard Guatemala tour. No large groups of tourists, just an intimate, authentic experience with a local Maya shaman.
The price is a bit higher than typical tours around Lake Atitlán, but that’s exactly what keeps it personal, small-scale, and respectful of the tradition.
Would I recommend it? Absolutely. But it’s not for everyone.
This excursion is perfect for travellers looking for a unique, spiritual experience during their trip through Guatemala. Not suitable for young children, and you should be reasonably fit. The walk to the cave isn’t long, but the terrain is uneven.
For us, this was one of the most memorable moments of our journey through Guatemala!
