Bang Krachao: step through Bangkok’s green lung

Need to escape the hustle and bustle of Bangkok? You can head to Bang Krachao, also known as ‘the green lung of Bangkok’. While most people opt for a bicycle tour, we chose a small group electric scooter (e-scooter) tour.

This tour felt much more unique than the typical bike tours, and it was a welcome cool-down! In this blog, we’ll share all about our experience.

Appointment at Klong Toei Pier

We’ve never been big fans of organized tours, preferring to explore on our own. However, we’ve come to realize that having a guide can be very valuable. So, for our last day in Bangkok, we decided to join a half-day e-scooter tour on the jungle island of Bang Krachao.

We booked the tour through GetYourGuide and arrived at the meeting point, Khlong Toei Pier, at 10 am. There, we met the other participants, a friendly couple from Australia. Soon, our guide arrived, bought us ferry tickets, and we crossed the Chao Phraya River.

Up on the Scooter

After less than 15 minutes on the ferry, we arrived at a shop/rental spot with bikes and scooters. There, we each received an electric scooter and a bottle of water, which fit perfectly in the front basket.

The guide gave instructions on how to use the scooter, and we all had a chance to take a short test ride. It’s not complicated—I had never ridden a scooter before, but I got the hang of it within a minute. Ready to go!

Touring the Jungle

When we first arrived in Bangkok, I felt a bit homesick—homesick for the beach and the jungle. That feeling quickly faded as I explored the city’s vibrant energy, but it was so refreshing to be surrounded by nature once again!

Bang Krachao is lush with greenery. There are mangrove forests, coconut plantations, and patches of untouched nature. It’s truly beautiful. Along the way, we spotted a small snake and a monitor lizard. We now understand why this is called “the jungle island” and why locals love coming here.

We also passed by the gardens of people living on the islet. It’s fascinating to see how they live, often on stilts above the water.

Wat Rat Rangsan

After enjoying the jungle ride, we stop at the Buddhist temple, Wat Rat Rangsan. Our guide, Pokpong, explains various Buddhist customs and demonstrates different temple items. Afterwards, we have the opportunity to ask questions.

By this point, after 20 days in Thailand, I had plenty of questions—about the gong, the red Fanta bottles everywhere, monks… and more. Thankfully, all my questions were answered.

At the end, he shows us items like a gong, drum, and bell. I even get to strike the gong three times—what a cool experience!

Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market

We continue our ride and stop at the Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market. On weekdays, this tour would include a stop at a betel nut plantation, but on weekends, the local market is open, so we head there instead.

The Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market is open every Saturday and Sunday from 07:00 to 16:00. It’s not to be confused with the touristy, large floating markets filled with boats—this is a real market for locals.

After several days in Thailand, we thought we’d already tried a lot of local food. But our guide arranges a variety of snacks we’ve never seen before. It’s great to try so many new things!

After tasting the treats together, we have some free time to explore. It’s nice to be one of the few tourists, just surrounded by locals. I take some videos for my Thailand video, and the people are happy to pose and are incredibly friendly.

After admiring the sights and smells, we walk back to the meeting point and hop back on the e-scooters.

Ending with a Thai Lunch

We continue through the nature reserve and end the tour with a Thai lunch at a riverside restaurant. We had already chosen our meals in advance, so it doesn’t take long before we’re served an abundance of food.

It’s a lively lunch, and we can’t stop chatting. By now, it no longer feels like a tour, but more like a day out with friends. We add each other on Facebook and exchange WhatsApp numbers so Pokpong can send us all the photos he took in Bang Krachao. It’s great having a guide who takes so many pictures!

After lunch, we take the boat back to busy Bangkok. What a wonderfully relaxing tour— we really enjoyed it!

How to Book the E-Scooter Tour in Bang Krachao

As you may have gathered, we’re really enthusiastic about this tour. Initially, we were unsure whether we wanted to explore on our own, but we really saw the benefits of an organised tour. Everything was included, and we didn’t have to spend any more baht.

The e-scooter was definitely the right choice. Since it’s electric, you get to enjoy a refreshing breeze, which is very welcome when it’s 35 degrees. We passed cyclists who were drenched in sweat. Although I do enjoy cycling on holiday, this was a refreshing change.
